The marine pilot onboard (LAB)
Marine pilots have to manoeuvre all types of sea-going vessels as well as having to deal with all the communications in the VTS-area. They have to take the hydro-meteorological circumstances into account and give directions to tug boats. Their up to the minute knowledge of tidal flows and currents, procedures, shipping traffic, ports, berths and cargos is of additional value in bringing a vessel to or from ports safely.
The marine pilot is, therefore, invaluable in realising the safe and efficient running of shipping traffic, including the protection of the environment and infrastructure. On top of this, however, is the pilot’s responsibility with regards to the ship and its crew.
To ensure that the highest quality is maintained within the profession of marine pilots, the manager of high risk operations adheres strictly to the regulations as stipulated in the law, such as the Regulations of the NLC. |
